What to Do when you can’t make yourself study
It’s inevitable that you will at some point struggle to stick with a study schedule. Unless, of course, you are a robot…and then you don’t need a degree, so why are you even studying?
When you can’t make yourself study you need a quick win. The forward momentum that feels good. Don’t focus on completing the 20-page paper right now, just focus on actually taking action. Here’s what you do:
- Plan an awesome break. Think about what you’ll enjoy doing. Imagine how you’ll feel. Relish it.
- Pick one thing to accomplish in your studies. It may be to read a chapter or write a specific portion of your research paper.
- Get started.
- Don’t let yourself take the break until you achieve your goal.
- When your goal is complete, take the break and enjoy the good times.
Why This Strategy Works
We don’t want to do things that we anticipate will make us feel bad. And let’s be honest, studying is never going to make us feel great.
Instead of fixating on studying and how boring and tired and confused and _____ (fill in the blank) it makes you feel, focus on something you enjoy doing and are looking forward to.
You will be much more motivated to start studying when you are focused on feeling good. Get your work done and enjoy yourself afterward.
